The three most common species of cockroaches that are problematic for home and business owners in the Southeast include: the German Cockroach, the American Cockroach, and the Smokybrown Cockroach.

Cockroach Identification and Removal

    • German Cockroach  – They are the most common species of cockroach found worldwide. German cockroaches are light brown to tan in color and have two distinctive black stripes down their back. They range in size from 1/2 – 5/8th of an inch in length. They are drawn to living in warm, humid environments and will eat almost anything.
    • American Cockroach – They are the largest species of cockroach that infest homes. American cockroaches are reddish-brown in color and have a distinctive yellow figure eight pattern on the back of their head. Adults can grow up to two inches in length and they generally enter into homes and other buildings through drains and pipes.
    • Smokybrown Cockroach – They are dark brown in color and an adult can reach 1 ½ inches in length. They are very strong flyers and have wings that extend out beyond their bodies. They can be found outside, living around homes in tree crevices, underneath of mulch, and around roof eaves. They will then enter into buildings through gaps, around utility entrances and through attic vents, as they forage for food.

Why do cockroaches infest homes and businesses?

Cockroaches enter into homes while foraging for food or while searching for a suitable environment to live in. They may also enter accidentally into homes and businesses in boxes, bags, and other packages.

Where do roaches hide?

Roaches hide in dark, damp areas of homes and businesses. During the day they can be found in basements, kitchens, crawl spaces, around water heaters, closets, drawers, pantries and inside of cabinets. When night comes around they will invade kitchens and other areas searching for food.

Are cockroaches a health risk?

Yes, cockroaches are a health risk to have in homes and businesses. Their feces and saliva can cause asthma attacks to be triggered in some people, especially young children.
