As we near the end of another year, it is time to take a look forward to what we can expect to see for pests inside our Knoxville homes this winter. Knowing what is coming helps us to take the steps needed to keep those pests out. Here's what you need to know.

Box Elder Bugs

Of all the pests on our lists, this is the only one that invades specifically during the winter. These bugs are not able to find the food they need inside our homes. They come in to escape the cold weather. When they do, they can stain our belongings, and create a nuisance.

Bed Bugs

These bugs are a pain (quite literally) all year long. But the winter months are the perfect time of year for bed bugs to spread from one home to the next. This is the time of year when we visit friends and family for the holidays or head back home from college dormitories. Since bed bugs cause irritating bites and feed on us while we're sleeping, it is a good idea to learn what signs bed bugs leave to alert us of their presence.

Carpenter Ants

Of all the ants that get into our homes, carpenter ants are the worst. Not only are they a destructive insect that creates tunnels and galleries in the wood of our homes, they are able to stay active all winter long. If you begin to see big ants crawling around inside your home, it is time to call a pest control company.

Cockroaches

These bugs need no introduction. You probably know all about the illnesses cockroaches can spread inside a home. What you may not know is that they can be driven into your home by the cold weather. That is why fall is a vital time to make sure your exterior walls and foundation are sealed up tight.

Rodents

Mice, rats, squirrels and other rodents can make your home their home any time of the year but, when temperatures fall, they have more incentive. And, since they are able to find food, water, and harborage in human dwellings, they aren't likely to leave once they get in. And, to make matters worse, rodents don't usually come in alone. They bring secondary pests like fleas, and ticks in with them.
