Subterranean and formosan termites require regular contact with soil in order to survive. For this reason, they live underground and access wood sources by building mud tubes through which they travel. Subterranean termites are known to infest tree stumps or dampened wood near the home, because they prefer wood that has already been weakened or in a state of decay. On the other side of the spectrum, drywood termites live in any habitat with sources of dry wood, which is why they are often found higher above ground in structures. They often nest deep inside of wood structures, and feed and live entirely within their wood source.
