We don’t know whether you’ve noticed this or not, but nature doesn’t want you to have a nice, manicured lawn. Nature wants to sprinkle unwanted vegetation in your yard, vegetation that is stronger than your turfgrass, and able to easily out-compete your grass for nutrients, water, and sunlight. Nature wants to send spores into your yard to cause fungus and plant disease to take root, and eat your turfgrass and ornamentals. And nature loves to send critters into your yard. They scamper in on top of the ground, they tunnel in underneath the ground, and they flutter in to deposit their eggs. When they do, their feeding, breeding, and tunneling can cause your grass to die. Here are three things you can do to protect your lawn from the harmful influence of lawn pests.

Fertilizer

A strong lawn is a resistant lawn. If you’re looking to keep pests out, feeding your lawn is the best way to do it. Apply fertilizer to wet grass and then wait a day to water it in. It is best to do this on days that are cooler, rather than hot days. Make sure to read the instructions closely for how much to apply and how often to apply it. More is not better. Ideally, you’ll want to feed your lawn in early spring, the middle of the summer, and in the fall to prepare it for winter.

It is also important to understand that your fertilizer needs to target the type of grass you have. All grass is not created equal. Each type needs different care and different products.

Weed Control

A healthy lawn will resist weeds, but it is usually necessary to help it with a quality weed control product. Be sure to read all of the instructions carefully. Weed control is a good thing but, like fertilizer, too much of a good thing is not always good. Be aware that there are some products that are a mix of weed control and fertilizer.

Maintenance

Wildlife prefers a yard with tall grass and weeds. Keeping grass short can make your yard less attractive. And make sure to water your lawn routinely to keep it strong and healthy.
