Do you suspect you have termites? Have you seen signs, and wonder if these dreaded, wood eating insects have chewed their way into your walls? It can be a horrible feeling, especially if you know that over $5 billion dollars in property damage is attributed to termites each year, in the United States. That is more than floods and fires combined! If you’re not seeing signs, let’s make sure you know what to look for.

Wood damage

If you find long strips carved out of your fence, patio, or deck, you probably have termites. You may also find wallpaper chewed, furniture carved, and other paper products with an eaten look to them. But not all wood damage is termites. Rodents chew on wood too, but their bites are much deeper. If you find a chew hole through a wall, that is not likely a termite hole. Termite holes tend to be small and higher on the wall. Mouse holes will be down by the baseboards.

Another commonly misdiagnosed termite sign is: damage to books, money, and other paper products. If you find your books shredded, you may have silverfish. If a termite is eating your books, the damage will be in much larger chunks, and you may find pieces of the hardback binder bitten right off. Silverfish will nibble away at a hardback, stripping the surface, one bite at a time.

If you find piles of sawdust, you have a problem, but it may not be termites. The reason I say ‘may not’, is because the droppings dry-wood termites leave can sometimes be mistaken for sawdust or dirt, due to their dry hardness. If you find specks of hard dry material, that look like light brown wood or black pepper, you need to have your home inspected by a professional, immediately.

If you find sawdust, you have another problem: carpenter ants. As carpenter ants burrow galleries through your wood, they push the chewed materials out. Termites do not. Termites consume wood.

Signs of termites

  • If you have gossamer wings littered on your deck, porch, window sills, or walkways, you had a termite swarm.

  • If you find mud tubing on your foundation walls, this is evidence of subterranean termites.

  • If you find tiny holes in your walls, the walls are bulging, or the doors and windows in your house don’t open smoothly, you could be in some serious trouble.

No home should be without termite protection. Have a pest management technician inspect your home, and outline monitoring and inspection options. Termites are silent and deadly. Don’t be another statistic. Get protected from termites, carpenter ants, rodents, roaches, silverfish and a host of other harmful pests, with a year round plan. It is worth every penny.
