Mouse Prevention Tips

It is that time of year again, the mornings and evenings are cooler, the days are shorter, the leaves are changing, there are pumpkins everywhere; and unfortunately, it is also the time of year when there are many, many mice trying to find their winter homes. The fall season is when mice are looking for a place to spend the winter that provides them with their three basic needs- warm shelter, food, and water. This is why it is important to take prevention steps now to stop these furry pests from becoming your new winter tenants!

Mice are a type of commensal rodent, which means that over time they have become slightly reliant on people for food and shelter sources. Even though mice may want to rely on us, we can’t let them; they are terrible houseguests- they carry diseases, destroy personal belongings, and damage the structure of homes and other properties.

Mice have front incisors that continuously grow, and in order to prevent them from overgrowing, they will constantly chew on objects. In homes, objects they love to chew include wires, pipes, drywall, flooring, furniture, pictures, and clothing. They will also feed on and contaminate your food sources. Mice will leave trails of urine and feces throughout your home and kitchen areas and introduce dangerous diseases into your home including salmonella, leptospirosis, dysentery, lymphocytic choriomeningitis, and even plague.

Luckily, for homeowners, there are many things that you can do to help deter mice from your property and keep them from getting into your home.

Mouse prevention tips include:

  • Remove fruits or nuts that have fallen from trees and bushes on your property.
  • Remove or place bird feeders away from the outside of your home.
  • Make sure that outdoor trash cans have tight fitting or locking lids and that they are stored away from the exterior of your house.
  • Place woodpiles on pallets up off of the ground and keep them away from the exterior of your home.
  • Seal cracks and crevices that are found in your home’s foundation and/or exterior walls; caulk any spaces found around exterior doors and windows. Place door sweeps underneath exterior doors.
  • Inside your home, keep clutter in basement, attic, and other storage areas to minimum.
  • Store food in sealed containers or in the refrigerator instead of out on kitchen counters.
  • Regularly remove trash from your home; and clean up spills and crumbs immediately.

Mice are persistent creatures; so despite your best efforts, they may still find a way into your home this fall or winter.
