Look For Bed Bugs When You Travel

It is travel season in Georgia. Woo-hoo! Folks are coming in, and many of you will be traveling out. If you plan to go visiting this summer, be aware that bed bugs are an ever increasing threat. These pests can hitchhike home with you in a number of ways. Here’s what you need to know.

Where do bed bugs live?

  • Hotels and motels. We probably don’t have to tell you that you can get bed bugs from staying the night in a hotel or motel. Anywhere there is a bed, you could find bed bugs.
  • Public places. These blood-eating pests are being found in more and more public venues, such as movie theaters and libraries. They can feed on you even when you are awake; which means they are more than able to thrive in any business that has upholstered furniture. They are also prone to leaving their eggs in crevices. This has made them a problem for libraries, as many people leave their books sitting right next to their beds.
  • Public transport. You can pick up bed bugs before you even get to where you’re heading. Bed bug infestations have been found in taxi cabs, buses, and even planes.
  • The homes of family and relatives. Here is an unexpected one. You can get bed bugs from staying at someone’s house. And, don’t be mistaken that bed bugs only live in homes that are dirty. These pests are not drawn to filth, dirt, or clutter. They are drawn to blood. That means they can be found in the cleanest of homes.

What are the signs of bed bugs?

  • Learn to recognize these oval rust-colored pests no matter where you are. All it takes is a single bed bug to climb into your clothes or bags to start an infestation in your home. And, if a bed bug lays eggs in your belongings or clothes, those eggs don’t need their mother to hatch when they get back to your home.
  • No matter where bed bugs live they leave the same signs: black streaks, black fecal pellets, black fecal staining, brown blood stains, shed skins, and a smell that some describe as a dirty locker room towel.

When you travel, always be on the lookout for bed bugs and signs of bed bugs. A quick inspection of your surroundings can save you from getting a bed bug infestation in your home.
