Do Rodents Prefer To Live Outside?

The weather here in Rome is getting warmer but does that mean rodents will leave your home once spring has sprung? Unfortunately for you, if you have rodents that got into your home this winter, those rodents are going to be more than happy to stay.

While many rodents do prefer to live in the wild, some rodents, like mice and rats, would rather dwell with humans in man-made structures than live outside. They may spend more time in the great outdoors when the weather is nicer, but they will return time after time to their cozy nests inside your home–if they are allowed to do so. And when you have rodents, you also have the potential of contracting some pretty serious illnesses.

What are some signs that you have mice or rats living inside your home?

  • Sounds: Mice and rats typically travel through and live inside, wall voids and attics. So, you will hear scratching, scampering and chewing noises if you have these destructive creatures inside your home. They are most active at night, which means you are likely to hear them as your house gets quiet and you are trying to go to sleep.
  • Droppings: Rodents are sure to leave their calling cards everywhere they go. You may not be able to see the urine, but if it builds up enough, you will begin to smell it. And their droppings are quite noticeable. The darker they are, the fresher they are.
  • Chew marks: Rodents have a pair of incisors that never stop growing; so they have a constant need to chew on things, in order to wear those teeth down. They will chew on cardboard, drywall, wood, plastics, even concrete. But the worst thing these furry invaders chew on is electrical wires. And that can spark a fire.
  • Grease marks: Rodents tend to have greasy fur. Wherever they travel, they tend to stick close to walls and squeeze through small spaces. When they do this, they leave behind grease from their fur.

What can you do to get rid of rodents?

While there are a number of do-it-yourself strategies for keeping rodents out of your home, once your home has been infested, it can be quite a challenge to get them all out and keep them out.
