Avoiding Termites Is A Full-Time Job

We all know what termites are, especially here in Alpharetta, Georgia where we have subterranean termites. Of all the termites that can get into a home, subterranean termites are the most destructive. This is because subterranean termites come up from the ground to feed. That means, they can slip past the best of defenses. They have even breached the defenses of the White House, one of the most secure locations in the country. And, unlike drywood termites, subterranean termite do not push their dropping out of kick out holes. So, you’re not going to have pepper-like droppings stacking up on your window sills to warn you of an infestation. But, all termites share one trait that makes them all bad to have in a home. Termites never sleep.

No matter what kind of termite attacks your home you can expect them to do it 24 hours a day, and under the right conditions, 365 days a year. This is because they don’t need to conserve energy like other insects.
Most insects are active during the night and sleep during the day, or vice versa. This act of sleeping is called torpor. It is more of a low-energy state than it is actual sleep. During torpor, an insect will sit dormant to conserve energy. In situations where insects are in a food-restricted environment, torpor will be longer. Termites do not have food restrictions, nor do they require protein like many other insects. They eat wood. And wood is everywhere. So they can stay active all the time.

While termites don’t become dormant daily, they can go into a state of dormancy called diapause when temperatures are unfavorable. Diapause is sort of like a long torpor, termites still grow, but are able to wake at any moment and get back to work.

If termites tunnel up from the ground and begin to feed in a home, they can continue to do so even during the winter. It depends on how cold their tunnels and mud tubes get. In Alpharetta and throughout Georgia, winters can be mild, making it easier for subterranean termites to continue their destruction all year long.
