Are Moles And Voles Dangerous?

 In Uncategorized

When moles and voles are a problem here in Atlanta, when they come into our yards by accident, they can make life miserable. But, is it dangerous to have moles and voles around? Danger comes in many forms. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

Bites
Moles can bite and they are able to carry rabies, but there is no historical data that suggests any human has ever contracted rabies from a mole bite. And, since moles don’t generally come in contact with humans unless they are handled, it is not likely that you will be bitten by a mole. It is important, however, to stay away from any mole or other wildlife that isn’t skittish in your presence. If this animal is not trying to avoid you, it very well could have rabies.
Voles can bite, and they can carry many diseases including tularemia and rabies. But, as with moles, there is no documented case of a vole giving rabies to a human. These animals are not inclined to bite people.

Illness
Animals can cause illness without biting people. When wildlife gets into trashcans, sewers, dumps, leach fields, compost piles, or expose themselves to dead animals, they can spread harmful bacteria into pantries, cabinets, kitchens, and outside cooking areas. Neither of these two animals is a danger in this way. Moles don’t get into homes at all. And, while voles are rodents, they do not invade homes like mice and rats do.

Parasites
All wildlife can bring secondary pests into your yard, and moles and voles are no exception. Fleas, ticks, mites, lice, and other creatures that choose a host to live on, can be brought into your yard by these two animals. If you have pets that roam your yard, they will have a higher chance of bringing parasites into your home if moles and voles are around.

The Real Danger Of Moles And Voles
When moles and voles get into a yard, the real danger is to trees, ornamentals, and lawn turf. If you’ve put time, energy, and money into having a beautiful landscape, these destructive pests will be dangerous to have around. But, you probably already know this. It is hard to miss the signs that moles and voles have targeted your property. They cause dead patches in your lawn, chewed areas on trees, damage to plants, raised tunneling and mounds of dirt, pathway through your grass, and much much more.
