Are Centipedes Dangerous To Humans?

 In Uncategorized

One of the more common questions regarding centipedes is “are they dangerous?” This is a wide open question that can’t be answered with a simple yes or no answer. Centipedes are predatory and, depending on the species of centipede, can be venomous. Some species, like the desert centipede, become quite large and stay outside while others are small and often found inside homes.

The smaller variety of centipedes will normally produce nothing more than a stinging reaction somewhat like a bee sting. Even then, a centipede bite normally happens only when they are stepped on or picked up. In areas of heavier infestations, one may be bitten when coming in contact with them while putting on clothing. The larger species will give a more venomous bite that can become extremely painful. Even then, they are rarely ever known to be fatal to humans. As with other pests of this nature, centipedes should not be handled. Small children or anyone susceptible to allergies should be closely watched after experiencing a centipede bite.

There are extreme cases where the bite can cause pain and swelling. While not life-threatening, other symptoms can include headaches, nausea and vomiting, and anxiety. Occasionally, lymph nodes in the areas of the bite can become swollen and painful and bites can even cause an increase in heart rate or palpitations.

The common house centipede has a long, flat body and can be as long as 1 to 1 ½ inches. The flattened body is made up of 15 segments with each segment having one pair of legs. The color is a yellow-brown with three darker colored stripes going down the top of the body. These common house centipedes can normally be seen in kitchens and bathrooms as well as basements and garages. The same type of centipede will often be seen outdoors in stacks of firewood.

While you may wonder if centipedes are dangerous, it may be interesting to note that they are good at controlling other household pests. Centipedes will prey on cockroaches, flies, silverfish, small spiders, and earwigs. This, of course, is a very small reduction of insect infestations and not something that will control pest populations.

While they may not pose a serious threat or danger, centipedes can become a nuisance. The best course of action is to contact your pest control professionals.
