Amazing Facts About Bees | Allgood Pest Solutions

In Bees & Wasps , Knoxville

Honey bees not only are the only insect that produce food (namely honey) for humans, they also play a large part in providing for us a wide variety of flowers, fruits and vegetables. Yup, it’s true. Did you realize that if we didn’t have honey bees, which make up 80% of all pollinators, our grocery stores would look downright sparse? What is a pollinator? A pollinator is any creature that causes plants to make fruit or seeds, by moving pollen from one part of the flower of a plant to another part. This fertilizes the plant and only fertilized plants can make fruit and/or seeds. Because of this, it is important that here in Knoxville, and around the world, we learn as much as we can about bees, and how we can help out in protecting them and other pollinators.

Other interesting facts about bees:

  • A bee hive has 3 types of bees: workers, drones, and the queen.

  • A queen bee can lay up to 1,500 eggs every day and lives up to 4 years. Constantly fed and groomed by attendant worker bees, her daily egg production may actually equal her own weight! That’s a lot of eggs!

  • Honey bees only travel around 3 miles from their hives and, as they do so, the humming sound that they make is caused by their wings beating. A bee’s wings stroke 11,400 times in one minute!

  • Honey bees never sleep, which is surprising, since their wings must be really tired.

  • Honey bees aren’t prone to stinging. Perhaps it is because after a honey bee stings, it dies. These are the only bees that this happens to.

Interesting facts about honey:

  • Honey is made up of 20% water and 80% sugars.

  • A single honey bee produces only about 1/12 of a teaspoon of honey in her entire lifetime.

  • One pound of honey requires around 750 bees to fly over 55,000 miles to visit 2 million flowers!

  • Bees work hard to produce honey to sustain them through the winter when flowers are not blooming so their food source is not available. In so doing, they pollinate plants which, in turn, brings us numerous foods.

How can we support honey bees and other pollinators?

It has become a recent concern that the number of honey bees is decreasing. Therefore, there are some things we can do to help support these, and other pollinators. The first thing that can be done is to increase green spaces wherever possible. And second, plant flowering plants! In increasing all green areas as much as possible in urban and other areas, we can all help to support our amazing bees, so we can continue to enjoy the honey they produce, and all the other fruits and vegetables they help to provide.
